A Kent-born songwriter won Album of the Year at last night’s BRIT Awards for his work on Harry Styles’ GRAMMY award-winning album.

Kid Harpoon, from Chatham, also known as Tom Hull, co-wrote and produced the number one album Harry’s House.

The former Rochester Math schoolboy attended the star-studded award show at the O2 Arena in London yesterday evening (February 11) alongside the likes of Lizzo, Sam Smith and indie band, Wet Leg.

He had already secured the prize for Songwriter of the Year which was announced in anticipation of the event but had to wait until the ceremony to find out if Harry’s House would secure the top spot.

Tom's BRITs success follows his Album of the Year win at last weekend's GRAMMY awards, and is the third chart-topping Styles' album to benefit from the Chatham man's talents.

Accepting the award, superstar Harry Styles said: “I'm so so proud to be a British artist out there in the world and I'm so proud to be here tonight celebrating British artists and British music.”

The Watermelon Sugar singer then thanked Tom Hull and fellow producer Tyler Johnson for their work on the album before passing the mic on.

Tom thanked his fellow Harry’s House songwriters before taking the opportunity to shout out to his wife.

He said: “I'm so proud to be British and that we get to do this for a living and we get to travel around the world being British and being weird with all our quirks, so thanks so much to everyone tonight.

“I want to thank Tyler and Harry, I love you like brothers, couldn't have asked for anyone better to do this with.

“Also my wife Jenny has promised me we're gonna pretend to be Maya [Jama] and Stormzy back in the day tonight.”

Tom then suffered the same fate as several other award winners throughout the night when ITV took issue with the the content of his next sentence, censoring the statement addressed directly to wife Jenny.

Born in Chatham, he grew up in Rochester and attended Troy Town school and the Math School, before embarking on a career in music, starting out as a singer-songwriter in the pubs and clubs of Medway, before moving to London.

After continuing as a solo performer he launched a career as a co-writer which would bring him co-writing credits with the likes of Lizzo, Florence and The Machine, Miley Cyrus, Jessie Ware, Maggie Rogers, Mabel and Years & Years.

Harry’s House was the biggest and fastest selling UK album of 2022, not leaving the Top Ten since May of last year, while its lead single ‘As It Was’, co-written by Tom Hull, was the UK’s biggest selling single of 2022, achieving over 2 billion global streams to date.

Additionally, it picked up GRAMMY Award nominations for Song of the Year and Record of the Year.

Tom’s accomplishments are showing no signs of slowing as already this year his song Flowers, which he co-produced with Miley Cyrus, debuted at the top of the singles chart.

Flowers had 9.9 million streams in its first seven days giving it the best performing release week overall since the also Tom Hull co-witten Harry Styles' single As It Was in April 2022.
