Concerns over the safety of a group of people at an abandoned gun tower led to lifeboat crews crashing a late-night party.

At around 11pm on Saturday, members of RNLI Sheerness were called to an incident unfolding at Grain Tower after both police and coastguard became concerned about a large group of people in the area.

Upon arrival, the lifeboat crew discovered a party taking place at the 19th century shoreline defensive base.

Around 69 people were enjoying the festivities with each confirming they were ok.

Lifeboat crews took a number from one of the revellers and passed it on to police before standing down at 11.37pm.

It was a busy weekend for the crew from Sheerness having also been called to a false alarm and a broken down vessel on the same weekend.

At around 10.36pm on Saturday (June17) members of the RNLI crew were called after red flares were spotted in the Stoke area of the River Medway.

A lifeboat arrived at around 11pm but nothing was seen except a group enjoying a bonfire and fireworks on the shoreline.

The crew stood down but was immediately redeployed to the party call.

The next day, after returning from an exercise, a request was made by coastguard for a lifeboat to help a motor cruiser carrying 10 people onboard.

It had suffered machinery failure near the Red Sand Towers and by 2.15pm a six-man lifeboat crew had spotted the stranded vessel anchored directly below one of the towers.

Southend lifeboat crew was then called to take over the tow which it did at 4pm, while the Sheerness lifeboat aided the group to Southend Pier where the passengers landed safely.
