A mother has spoken of the terrifying moment a lorry shed its load as she stood outside a school.

The incident happened at around 1.50pm yesterday as Doris Gasson and her daughter Pheobe were stood outside Hundred of Hoo Academy, Main Road, Hoo.

The lorry, which belonged to The Swain Group, shed its load of concrete tubing leaving large chunks of concrete strewn in the road.

The mum from Allhallows said: "I was stood outside of the Hundred of Hoo Academy with my 12-year-old daughter, I was on the phone with my mum as the Swain lorry drove past.

"As it started driving over the speed bump, I heard a massive thud. I spun round and witnessed the lorry continue to drive off down the road as my daughter and I was left speechless.

"We both ran over to see the damage and discovered it all across the road.

"Between my daughter and I, another lady and two gentleman, we cordoned off the road and cleared it as best we could."

Matthew Deer, managing director for The Swain Group said: "We are investigating what happened.

"There was a fault somewhere on the strapping on the trailer. We are just trying to find out why it happened, there's an investigation into this internally."

Passers-by reported the incident to police, who have also been approached for comment.
