Police say they were initially called to the High Street at 2.21pm following a disturbance at the Chatham Express shop.

A police presence remains outside the shop but officers were also sent to Hartington Street where a knife has been recovered by officers.

It is believed the first incident broke out at the store and then moved to the street less than a mile across town.

One man has been arrested on suspicion of assault.

Police spokesman Vicki Foster said: "Two men have received injuries requiring hospital treatment. One of the two men has been arrested on suspicion of assault.

"A knife has been recovered from the scene and officers are still in the area making enquiries surrounding the incident."

Witnesses reported the victim had been stabbed multiple times, but this has not been confirmed by police.

It is not yet known whether he suffered serious injuries.

Ambulance service spokesman Rich Airey confirmed paramedics were called at about 2.40pm.

He added: "I can confirm ambulance crews attended the scene following reports of an assault.

"The air ambulance service joined us at the scene and one person has been airlifted to hospital after being treated at the scene."

Part of the street has been taped off by officers while they launch an investigation.

Meanwhile, an ambulance and critical care car were also sent to the incident to join the helicopter.

A witness, who asked not be named, said she saw a man being arrested.

The 48-year-old added a knife had been discarded by the suspect after it was thrown over a roof and into a neighbouring garden before landing on a pathway.
