Man attacked with hammer at cashpoint in Chatham

A man was taken to hospital after he was hit in the head with a hammer during a robbery at a cashpoint.
He was withdrawing money from an ATM in Ordnance Terrace in Chatham when another man allegedly asked him to handover the money and threatened him with a hammer.
The victim put the money in his pocket and the two began to struggle, leading to the suspect hitting the victim on with hammer on his head.
To fight back the victim picked up a shop sign and hit the suspect with it.
Both fell to the floor but the suspect managed to steal the victim's wallet and cash before running down an alleyway.
The victim was taken to hospital and was treated for his head injury.
Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident.
The suspect has been described as male, white, late 20’s and wearing a light blue hooded top and a dark jacket which had light stripes down the side.
He was also wearing a baseball cap.
