Man falls from the The Pentagon Shopping Centre car park in Chatham

A man is in a serious condition in hospital after falling from a car park roof.

The man is said to have fallen from Chatham Pentagon Shopping Centre, at about 10am this morning

Eyewitnesses said police, firefighters, ambulance crews, forensic officers and detectives were sent to the scene and the man, who is thought to have suffered serious leg injuries was taken to hospital.

Three police cars blocked The Brook and there were long queues on Dock Road.

The Pentagon Shopping Centre and the former Chatham Bus Station has been cordoned off.

The council owned multi-story car park next to the Pentagon has also been blocked by police.

Police cordoned off the alleyway next to Medway Magistrates Court and officers also went into the Jobcentre plus building to inquire if the man has been in the building before he fell from the car park.

Cars were diverted to Whiffen's Avenue, along Rope Walk, Cross Street and back down Slicketts Hill while the cordon was in place.

The incident caused huge tailbacks across the town.

Martin Very, a spokesman for police said: "Officers, South East Coast Ambulance Service and Kent Fire and Rescue Service were at The Brook, Chatham following reports that a man has fallen from a shopping centre car park.

"Kent Police was called at 10am on Thursday, June, 14 and The Brook was closed to vehicles and pedestrians between the junctions with Whiffen’s Avenue and Slicketts Hill.

"A man has been treated for injuries that are described as serious and he has been taken to London hospital for further medical attention.

"Inquiries are ongoing into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The Brook will remain closed this morning and drivers are asked to seek alternative routes."

Police had also put an extra smaller cordon with two cones underneath the bridge which goes across The Brook to the shopping centre.

The emergency services left scene at about 12.40pm and the road was fully re-opened.
