Mr Busher was originally told that there would be around a two hour wait for an ambulance to get there, but unable to move, he was forced to wait.

The self-employed carpenter from Hoo was playing for the Medway Lions Reserves against New Brompton Gills Reserves at Knight's Place Recreation Ground, Strood as part of the Medway Messenger Sunday League.

He said: "I was just laying in the middle of a field but I eventually managed to get up into a chair.

"I knew what I had done as soon as it happened, but I just had to lay there it was horrendous.

"I was in agony."

Players rallied round to help him and even the groundsman stayed for an extra two hours after his shift until paramedics arrived.

Team mate Neil Drysdale said: "When we first called they said it would be two hours, when itv was longer we called back and they just weren't interested.

"It was freezing as well, but about eight of us all stayed with him until they got here.

"We all took our coats off to put them over him to try and keep him warm.

"After the adrenaline rush, his pain levels increased so much but all we could give him was some paracetamol and ibuprofen."

South East Coast Ambulance have been contacted for a comment.
