Maths was given a cool makeover at one school which has a growing number of rock stars as a result.
Warren Wood Primary Academy in Rochester held a Timestable Rock Stars Day, when pupils dressed up and took part in quizzes and games.
Emily Harber, the lead of times tables at the school in Arethusa Road, said: “This year I created a red carpet, we had tinsel curtains, and the children came into school dancing to rock music played through speakers.
"In the morning, we had a virtual rock concert. We also had conga lines and celebrated amazing times table achievements where children won medals, trophies and chocolate gold battle coins.
“The children spent the whole day practising their times tables by singing and chanting, creating artwork and board games.
"They even completed a quiz to find out information about their school and teachers by answering times table questions. Some classes created their own rock star videos."
The day was based on Times Tables Rock Stars, a programme of daily times tables practice used by primary and secondary schools. Prizes and certificates are given out in assembly weekly.
By answering various times table questions in certain allocated times, children gain a 'rock status' based on their speed.
If they answer five or fewer questions in 60 seconds they start as a Wannabe, six questions gets them to a Garage Rocker, seven a Busker, eight correct means a Gigger, a proper Headliner needs 19 correct, 20 to 29 makes a Rockstar, 30 to 59 is a Rock Legend and finally, when someone answers 60 correct in 60 seconds, they become a super Rock Hero.
Warren Wood now has 13 Rock Heroes, 51 Rock Legends and 61 Rockstars.
