Medway upset the London 3 South East form book with a 15-7 win at unbeaten Charlton Park on Saturday.
They led 15-0 at half-time before the home side reduced the deficit to eight points soon after the restart, but a disciplined display by Taff Gwilliam’s maturing young side won the day.
Glen Wadsworth kicked them in front with a penalty after only five minutes, and they increased the lead 15 minutes later.
Ollie Cargill and the back-row defended well and, as the ball was moved wide, Wadsworth intercepted on his own 22 metre line, before running the length of the field to score under the posts, and then convert his own try.
Solid kicking and good decision making pinned the home side back, and Medway’s reward came with a second try on the half-hour courtesy of a move straight off the training ground. Wadsworth was the orchestrator, putting Rob Ellis in for an unconverted effort.
Medway had to regroup when Andrew Connell was forced off with an arm injury, and they were made to work hard early in the second half.
Park’s first score came with 35 minutes left, but great defence and solid scrummaging kept the lead intact to seal a memorable victory.
