Medway's hope of a league and cup double are still alive after they beat Orpington 55-3 in the Shepherd Neame Kent Vase quarter-final on Saturday.

Showing five changes from the team that won the Kent 1 title the previous week, Medway played into a strong breeze in the first half. They defended well – conceding only one penalty for offside – and led 12-3 at half-time following tries from Billy Humphrey and Rob Ellis with Glen Wadsworth kicking one conversion.

Medway played at a higher tempo in the second half and the big visiting forwards struggled to match the pace. The home side dominated possession, despite going down to 14 men when referee John Norton yellow-carded Monish Shome for persistent offence.

Medway scored seven second-half tries through 17-year-old centre Stuart Stockford, full-back Darren Kistner, Colin Chapman, scrum-half Rob Longstaff, Wadsworth and two by Humphrey, who completed a deserved hat-trick. Wadsworth converted four of the tries.
