Traffic chaos as Ingram Road, Gillingham, closed until June for CityFibre works

Residents say a month long road closure is causing “traffic chaos” as motorists are diverted down narrow side streets.

Ingram Road, in Gillingham, has been shut between Railway Street and Church Path since May 15 to allow for CityFibre works.

But those living nearby have said it is causing “mayhem” in adjoining Granville Road and Maple Avenue as they see queues of traffic diverted everyday.

Rachel – who did not want her surname published – lives in Granville Road and said the streets are not fit for the increased number of motorists.

She added: “It is just blocking the whole road up as there are no passing places as it is too narrow and full of parked cars on either side.

“When people do get through they drive so fast to make it out before another car comes down. I am worried someone is going to get hurt.

“It is horrible. You do not even want to drive down here and park yourself, and we live here.

“It is chaos, it is just mayhem, especially when people are driving home from work because it just gets backed up.

“An ambulance could not get through the other day, it is a worry.”

Ingram Road will be closed until June 11 while the utility company installs broadbrand infrastructure.

A spokesman for CityFibre said: “We are bringing world class full fibre digital connectivity to Medway and once complete, the digital transformation will unlock enormous benefits for the local communities as residents and businesses gain access to lightning fast and reliable broadband services.

“As with any major infrastructure programme, we are required to enforce a closure on Ingram Road to ensure we adhere to health and safety protocols.

“We would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused and reassure residents that we are doing everything in our power to minimise disruption while we complete our essential infrastructure works as quickly as possible.”
