Officers have now started an arson inquiry after the vehicle was destroyed just before midnight.

Two fire engines were sent to extinguish the flames and firefighters in breathing apparatus spent half-an-hour putting out the fire.

Another vehicle parked close to the campervan was also damaged by the heat from the flames.

No one was injured during the incident.

A police spokesman said: "Kent Fire and Rescue Service extinguished the fire, however, the cause is believed to be suspicious and officers are conducting inquiries to establish the full circumstances."

It follows a busy night for firefighters in Medway after crews were called to a pile of rubbish alight in a front garden in Gillingham.

A fire engine was also called to the Tap 'n' Tin nightclub in Chatham after a reveller pulled an alarm forcing the venue to evacuate.
