Motorists could be stuck in traffic jams in Strood for the next couple of days as Medway Council make changes to crossings in Gun Lane.
The road has been closed to allow the work to be completed and a diversion is in place for motorists along Bryant Road, near Strood Library.
The authority is removing a pedestrian island in the road and putting in another enlarged island and a zebra crossing in.
While the road is closed contractors are also resurfacing the pathways and the carriageway approaching the new crossing.
The work will also involve engineers laying ducting for the new zebra beacons and street lights and they will also have to alter road markings after the work is completed.
The roadworks are expected to be finished by the end of tomorrow (Friday).
