A young boy has suffered serious injuries to his leg in a crash on the M2.

The motorway was closed in both directions and the air ambulance was called after the accident involving a 4x4 carrying four children.

A police spokeswoman said officers were sent to Junction 3 at 2.50pm to reports the vehicle had overturned on the London-bound carriageway.

Three ambulances, a responder car and the air ambulance were called, and a seven-year-old boy was taken by road to King's College Hospital in south London with a fractured leg.

He was accompanied by a man who suffered minor injuries in the crash.

The three other children in the 4x4 were not seriously hurt.
