Man killed in 'hit-and-run' crash in Cliffe, near Rochester named as Cliffe Woods Primary School teacher Ben Allen

A "much-loved" teacher has been named locally as the victim killed in a suspected hit-and-run crash.

Tributes have flooded in to Ben Allen, 27, who worked at Cliffe Woods Primary School, after he died in the early hours of this morning.

Police and paramedics were called to a report of an injured man near Station Road in Cliffe at 2.25am.

Mr Allen was tragically pronounced dead at the scene following the suspected hit-and-run which has seen police arrest two men after launching an investigation.

Flowers have been laid outside the school today by parents and those who knew him.

"You were a much-loved teacher and we are all devastated to hear this news," one tribute said.

"Thank you for inspiring so many children."

Another said: "Ben, heaven has gained another angel. A much-loved teacher and colleague. You will be missed so much. Sending all my love to your family at this difficult time."

One person wrote: "He was amazing. He taught both my boys and will always be remembered for buying them sweets and drawing Pokémon with them before lessons.

"I hope these memories and messages in some small way help his family."

Another tribute said: "He was such a lovely guy. The kids at the school adored him. He will be terribly missed."

One person commented: "A truly wonderful teacher who was so kind and popular with all the children.

"All my children have the fondest memories with Mr Allen.

"So young, such a tragic and sad loss felt by so many.

"Thinking of his friends and family at this devastating time."

It is understood the school sent an email to parents today informing them of Mr Allen's death.

Police and paramedics were called to a report of an injured man and he was found to have injuries "consistent of being involved in a road traffic collision" but no vehicle had stopped at the scene, police say.

The victim, a man aged 27, was declared deceased at the scene and his next of kin have been informed.

A police spokesman said: "Following a search of the area, a short time later officers arrested two men, aged 28 and 32, from Cliffe, on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. A vehicle was also recovered.

"Officers are appealing for witnesses who may have seen a man walking along the B2000 before the collision."

Police would also like to hear from witnesses who saw a grey VW Scirocco in the area either before or after the collision.

Anyone with mobile, CCTV or dashcam footage is also sought.
