A mother-of-two who grew six cannabis plants in her child's bedroom has given up smoking the drug after social services became involved with her family following the discovery.

Police raided Katrina Parry’s home in Luton Road, Chatham, in January and found the plants, which were up to 2ft tall.

Her children were at home at the time and officers found a "grow tent" in one of their bedrooms.

The plants were said to be in good health and officers also found plant feed in the room as well as growing instructions inside.

Officers also found a bag of herbal cannabis and some buds in a tissue in the kitchen.

Parry, 35, and her partner were both arrested, but he was later released and she was charged with being concerned with the production of cannabis. Parry, who pleaded guilty at Medway Magistrates' Court, said the room was not used by her children.

Alan Balneaves, defending, said: "She didn't think it was illegal and read on the internet it was legal.

"Social services have now had involvement and she has not smoked it since.”

Magistrates placed Parry on a 12-month community order which will see her complete 80 hours of unpaid work, with £85 costs.
