Police remain at a stables after a man who worked there was found dead with head injuries.

Police were called to Capstone Stud Farm in Capstone Road, Gillingham just after 11am on Tuesday.

Paramedics confirmed the 70-year-old man was dead, and appeared to have suffered head injuries. Police have revealed he was found in the caravan where he lived on site.

The man is understood to have helped look after the horses and had worked there for eight or nine years.

A horse owner who rents one of the stables at the farm and who did not want to be named, said: "We weren't allowed to go on site yesterday [Tuesday] because the police prevented us from going on. We've not been allowed on site today."

The death is being treated as suspicious and inquiries into the circumstances are ongoing.

Police remained at the scene yesterday and were spotted searching a field and a neighbouring property off Capstone Road.

The area was cordoned off for several hours and 'police slow' signs placed in the road.

The man’s family has been informed.

A post-mortem examination was carried out yesterday, but further tests are needed to establish the cause of death.

Formal identification is expected to take place today.

Detectives from the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate are handling the investigation.
