Rainham's new Wetherspoons needs a new name, and you can choose it
13:00, 11 October 2017
Rainham’s former Railway pub is reopening as a Wetherspoon’s and you can help name it.
Company chairman Tim Martin says they have four suitable names and is calling on readers to select their favourite.
The Station Road hostelry has undergone a £1.7 million refit since it closed in 2012.
It is not yet known when it will reopen.
The proposed names are The Railway Hotel, The Temperance Hotel, The Sayer’s Arms and The Solomon Brice.
It was known as The Railway Hotel from 1901.
Before then, it had been known as The Temperance Hotel, when it was run by Elizabeth Sayer, which leads to the suggestion of The Sayer’s Arms.
The meadow opposite the pub was owned by Solomon Brice (and became known as Brice’s Meadow), a farmer and builder whose business was continued by his son, also called Solomon.
