ONE of Kent's most wanted men has been arrested in a dawn raid at a flat in south east London. Turkish-born gunman Celal Ofori, known as Gel, is being held at Chatham Police Station where he is being questioned over allegations of attempted murder and armed robbery in Strood this summer.

His capture at a flat in Eltham ended a four-month undercover police operation and an appeal on BBC's Crimewatch UK programme. Five officers stormed the flat and found Ofori, 28, with a woman believed to be his girlfriend.

Police are questioning him about a shooting at the Sportsman pub in Brompton Road on July 14. Shots were fired at the window while a party was being held in the early hours of the morning. They also want to ask him about an armed raid at an Esso garage in Frindsbury Road shortly afterwards. He is also being connected with raids on a newsagents and a post office.

The search switched to the Metropolitan police area after the television appeal, which resulted in a good response from viewers. After setting up an incident room at Rochester Police Station, the inquiry team took the unusual step of publishing his photograph and identity.
