The former Beatle – who headlined the festival on Saturday – asked organisers if they could fit in the Carlisle band as he is a fan of their music.

A spokesman for The Rabbit Hole – bar and music area at Glastonbury – said: "When a request from Paul McCartney came through to Rabbit Hole HQ to ask if we could fit in a band he is a fan of, The White Rabbit's ears pricked up.

"A new outfit from Cumbria, Hardwicke Circus are, in our opinion, going to be enormous.

"Their first album, The Borderland is a blindingly brilliant debut. Every song is a massive tune. "If there is one band not to miss this weekend, it is these guys."

They played at The Rabbit Hole on Sunday at 3am to 4am in the venue's 2022 headline slot.

Speaking on their Facebook page before the gig, the band said: "We are not even joking. Thanks Macca for getting us on Glasto. Our minds are well and truly blown."

Hardwicke Circus is formed by brothers Jonny Foster and Tom Foster, Joe Hurst, Lewis Bewley-Taylor and Andy Sax.

They will now be performing at a more reasonable hour at the GlassBox Theatre in MidKent College Medway Campus at 7pm on Friday, July 1.

Live music at the venue is arranged by the Riverside Rhythm Club.
