Brave Libby Blow battles with a crippling genetic condition which will one day confine her to a wheelchair.

But the three-year-old does not let anything get her down despite her illness which means she cannot walk unaided.

The plucky tot from Rainham, maintains as much independence by whizzing around in an adapted electric wheelchair.

But the reality is after being diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy from the age of one, she will gradually deteriorate as she gets older.

She will lose her mobility and it could affect her breathing and ability to chew food.

Her parents Penny and Andrew Blow have now launched a campaign to raise £10,000 to adapt their home in Pembroke Gardens to support her needs.

The money will pay for an extension for a downstairs bedroom and wet room along with specialist disability equipment, Penny and 34 friends and relatives will be embarking on their first sponsored event on Saturday on a 5k run and obstacle course at Brands Hatch.

Penny, 28, who works part time at Asda, said: “When Libby started learning to walk we noticed over time that something was not quite right with her legs.

"After seeing health visitors and consultants at Medway hospital we were referred to the Evelina’s children’s hospital in London.

"After many appointments and tests we finally got a diagnosis. We were devastated.”

The family are determined that Libby leads as normal a life as possible.

She goes to Parkwood pre-school, loves swimming and playing in the garden.

Penny said both she and Andrew, 30, an IT consultant, are overwhelmed with support they have received.

She said: “Libby is the most amazing happy little girl who doesn’t let anything get in her way.

"She is always so positive and is so determined to do as much as she can herself.”
