A council has received further funding to transform Chatham town centre.

The funding will be used for a number of projects including a deep clean of the High Street and environmental improvements.

It will also go towards the inclusion of as dedicated anti-social behaviour warden in the town centre and extending the Safer Medway Radio scheme which aims to combat crime and anti social behaviour.

The council received £259,462 to spend in Chatham under what is known as section 106 funding.

Section 106 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990 requires developers to enter into an agreement with local councils to make financial contributions to reduce the impact of their development on the local community.

It worked with Chatham Town Centre Forum to identify the top priorities for improving the town centre.

Cllr Jane Chitty (Con), Medway Council’s portfolio holder for planning, economic growth and regulation, said: "Medway Council has invested heavily in Chatham town centre and its transformation is already attracting more businesses and shops to the high street.

"I hope the new initiatives will continue to see Chatham flourish.”

Gian Chahal, Chairman of the Chatham Centre Forum, said: “I was delighted to hear that we had secured funding.

"This will allow the Chatham Town Centre Forum to continue to support local businesses in the town.”
