Police cordon off section of Chatham High Street after bomb threat

Police are at the scene of a premises in Chatham High Street which received an anonymous bomb threat.

Officers were called at 1.12pm and cordoned off a section of Chatham High Street between Luton Arches and Go Outdoors as a precaution.

Nothing suspicious has been found but officers are carrying out enquiries.

One witness said officers appeared to be securing the area rather than searching for anyone.

Patrick Noble, who lives in Upbury Way which has also been closed off said: "I tried to check which roads were open so my wife could get home but was told to stay indoors.

"I heard them shouting at people in another blocks of flat to stay in and shut their doors and windows.

"We have a two year old and although he's oblivious to what's going on it feels like he might be in danger. They haven't given us much information on what's going on.

"My wife was allowed to walk down the road but had to park at the top."

Andrea Button, who runs a funeral directors in the High Street, came outside at lunchtime to see police cars and the road cordoned off.

She said : " We were told a parcel was delivered to Turning Point this morning and a phone call was received warning not to open it.

"The road outside has been closed and the road going up behind Go Outdoors".

The cordon was lifted at 4.50pm.
