Police on patrol in the Broadwater Road area requested the car to stop over concerns it was running on false registration plates.

The car was found dumped in The Heath - about a mile from where police first encountered the vehicle - about 10 minutes later.

A search was launched to locate the driver with help from the National Police Air Service.

About 35 minutes after first requesting the car to stop, officers located a man at 5.05pm.

A 23-year-old man from Chatham was located in Red Hill to the south of the village and arrested.

Police say he was arrested on suspicion of failing to stop when requested by an officer and remains in custody as inquiries continue.
