A riverside pub is preparing to reopen early in the New Year after a half a million pound facelift - and it will create 40 new jobs.

The historic Command House, on the banks of the River Medway in Chatham, closed in mid-November for a £512,000 refurbishment.

The launch, scheduled for January 11, comes with a new food and drinks menu, including Tipsy Afternoon Tea with prosecco and cocktails, and full Sunday roasts with all the trimmings.

Built in the 1800s, the Grade II listed new-look hostelry steeped in military history, has period features and a panoramic view over the river towards the former Chatham Dockyard and the ongoing regeneration town centre project.

The building, in Dock Road, boasts features including brick-vaulted ceilings in the basement bar, recessed windows and period tile and flagstone floors. There's seating options at every turn, from quiet, secluded nooks to family tables.

The large garden area has also been revamped. Traditional picnic-style tables have been renewed and refurbished. There is also a garden bar meaning you can order a drink while staying outside. The garden bar is served by its own dedicated beer cellar, so there's a full range of drinks available.

From the Lunch Date menu to dinner options, there's everything from crowd-pleasing sharing dishes to pies and light bites. Food is served from 12pm to 10pm daily.

“It is a new chapter and I cannot wait to see the pub go from strength to strength"

The extensive drinks menu includes classic cocktails, such as Aperol spritz and espresso martini. If you enjoy gin, there are numerous options from a traditional London Dry to raspberry and watermelon infusions. There is also a Gin of the Month special to discover your new favourite tipple. On tap, a selection of regional and local ales and craft ciders are available.

A new start means a new team and the new Command House team is raring to go.

General manager Alex Townsend said: “I am so excited about the future of The Command House. The team love the pub’s new look and can’t wait to show people around when we open our doors again. The new menu is delicious and truly has something for everybody.

“It is a new chapter and I cannot wait to see the pub go from strength to strength. We are delighted to welcome guests, events and the local community again.”

Once reopened, it will be welcoming community groups through the doors, including the local mother and baby club.

There is an action-packed weekly calendar of events planned, from quizzes to local events and more. Keep an eye on The Command House website and social media for upcoming news or to plan your visit.
