THE cost of repairing Medway's roads was revealed as £3 million as councillors demanded to know why the streets repeatedly need fixing.

Members of the environment overview and scrutiny committee also demanded officers provide a schedule of work for the coming months. Cllr Derek Munton raised the problems, citing his Strood ward, Temple Farm, as being littered with potholes and uneven surfaces.

He said: "The ward looks very bad and people tell me it is the worst in Medway." He demanded that officer Mark Seed explain to the committee how road repairs are prioritised and to take the members on a tour of the worst roads.

Cllr Les Earle also demanded that the schedule of repairs, be made available to members to make answering questions from the public easier, without having to disturb officers for each query.

Mr Seed explained that High Streets are checked weekly, main roads monthly and all other roads twice a year, with problems arising in the interim dealt with immediately if they are hazardous or put on a list to be visited by engineers.

He told the committee that while being aware of roads in need of repair, the budget for the work did not stretch to repairing them all permanently and temporary measures were often used as cheaper solutions.

The councillors' demands to see the schedule of work and be taken on a tour would both be met before the next meeting in four weeks.
