People have the chance to quiz train bosses about a controversial new platform at Rainham railway station.

A second meeting is being held to discuss work taking place to build a bay platform that will allow more trains to and from London to stop in the town.

The project has led to opposition from residents whose homes back on to the current track – as they will soon have a platform at the bottom of their gardens.

The current Platform 1 is being extended by about 40m and homeowners are worried about noise from the speaker system and trains waiting with their engines running, as well as light pollution.

Network Rail held a public meeting at the end of March but could not answer many questions because issues such as lighting and speakers are dealt with by Southestern. Representatives from the train operator will be at the second meeting tomorrow (Saturday).

It is at the Oast House Community Centre, Granary Close, Rainham, from 10am to 11am, followed by a more informal drop-in session until 1pm.

The changes at Rainham station are part of a major project in Medway which also includes the new station at Rochester, signal upgrades and improvements at Strood.
