Sian Evans from Rainham is the new Kent ladies’ golf champion.

The Rainham Mark Grammar School sixth-form pupil, pictured, has already broken into the England under-18 elite squad and confirmed her potential by winning the county title at Langley Park Golf Club last week.

She said: "This is the first senior title I have won and I was pleased when I sank the winning putt (in the final). My dad (Stuart) was caddieing for me and we were running around the green together!"

Evans qualified for the matchplay stage of this year’s championship with third in the strokeplay section at Beckenham.

Then, after cruising past Pamela McGuirk (Prince’s) 8&7 in the last 16 and Brittany Burton (Sittingbourne) 3&1 in the quarter-finals, she overcame Sophie Daws (Littlestone) 4&3 in the semi-finals.

That set Evans up for an all-Medway clash in the final with Jerry Lawrence (Rochester & Cobham). She was always in control of the contest and closed out a 3&1 victory on the 17th.

A member at Faversham, one-handicapper Evans has been awarded a golf scholarship by East Tennessee State University and will be starting college in the USA in August. She added: "My ambition is to turn professional after I have completed my scholarship and play on the LPGA (US Women’s) tour."
