They spent most of the day in Kingfisher Drive and blocked off half the road for several hours.

A man who lives within where the cordon was put in place, and was unable to leave his house, said: "My wife woke me up at about 5.45am and I saw there were ambulances and police cars literally right outside my front door.

"There were officers already at our house as they noticed we have CCTV."

He said they watched the footage and saw someone "staggering down the pavement with no top on" at around 3.20am.

The witness added: "He fell into my van and then disappeared onto the grass verge about 30 feet down the road.

"At about 4.20am he is laying on the floor and at 5.10am the first response team came down.

"When I looked through the window at 6.10am they were putting him in the back of the ambulance.

"It is just a shock, from seeing him staggering down the pavement and watching the CCTV he does not move at all. I hope he is ok."

He said a taxi was driving down the street and the driver must have rung the emergency services.

They have not been given any updates on the man's condition or when the cordon is likely to be lifted.

Police confirmed they were investigating.

Spokesman Scarlet Drayson said: "Kent Police was called to Kingfisher Drive, Chatham, shortly after 5am on Sunday, March 6.

"A man found on the roadside was unresponsive and taken to a local hospital.

"Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate officers are leading an investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding this incident."
