Traffic was building after a water pipe burst and left parts of a road submerged.

Princes Avenue, near the junction with Prince Charles Avenue, Walderslade, was flooded, and part of the area was cordoned off.

Cars could be seen queueing to drive around the water.

The 3inch in diameter pipe burst near to where gas works were taking place, however, SGN confirm its works did not cause the fountain.

Spokesman Waseem Hanif said:" We’re carrying out upgrades to our gas network in Princes Avenue.

"Contractors 360 Civil Engineering, who are working on our behalf, were on site at around 9.30am this morning when a nearby water main burst, this was not caused by our work."

Southern Water confirmed, after being called in by a third party, an inspector immediately attended the site with a repair team.

They had to push back the water, at midday they made the repair and the water was back by 12.25pm.

Water may have been slightly discoloured at first but it should return to normal after running the tap.

The firm has apologised for any inconvenience caused.

SGN has been on site since October 31 and the gas works are due to finish in late January.
