A cheeky robin has found an unlikely new home – inside a carpet showroom.

The bird flew into the Carpet Sales Centre in Cuxton Road, Strood, and made a cosy nest between three rolls of carpet.

The red-breasted bird, which has been named Robin by centre staff, was spotted flying around outside two weeks ago, but has since taken up residence in the workshop.

Alison Russ, who works for the firm on Ballard Business Park, said: “He was flying around outside and one day he just started walking in the workshop.

“He started making a nest in the underlay but now he’s made a nest in three rolls of carpet which we’re going to leave. One of the rolls is completely full up with leaves.”

But the garden bird is not as friendly as he may appear.

Alison said: “I was standing talking to him the other day –saying are you being a good girl or boy – when he just flew up to me and hissed.”

Staff are picking up bits of carpet fluff and putting them into a pile for Robin to use for his nest.

They have bird feeders outside but have been putting out extra food and water for Robin.

According to the RSPB, robins often nest in unlikely locations, including sheds, kettles, boots, under car bonnets, in farm machinery, even on boats in daily use.

Robins can be seen all year round and, contrary to their cute appearance, can be aggressively territorial. Males and females look identical.

They do not usually breed until March, but after a mild December they can start their courtship in January.
