Motorists were stuck in traffic for 70 minutes after a crash caused 'a substantial diesel spill' near the start of the M2 in Kent.

Police initially set up a rolling roadblock on the A2 Watling Street coastbound between Brewers Road/Thong Lane/Halfpence Lane (Cobham/Shorne/Inn On The Lake) and M2 junction 1 (Strood).

Three out of four lanes were later closed and traffic was queuing back to the approach from Pepperhill.

The exact circumstances are not yet clear, but motorists reported seeing a tyre in the middle of the carriageway.

The crash happened at around 3.40pm and the road did not fully reopen until 5.45pm.

Delays were still reported in the area until around 6.20pm.
