Rochester branch of Subway refused permission to stay open until 2.30am

A fast-food chain which wanted to stay open until 2.30am has had its application refused.

Subway in Rochester High Street had applied for the extended opening hours on Friday and Saturday night to profit off late night revellers.

Instead the applicant, Thaj Mohamed Mahmooth of Tymz Food Limited, was told the branch can only stay open until 1am with, while food and drink cannot be served after 12.40am.

It comes after objectors raised concerns about noise, disturbance and litter problems.

Objectors who attended the meeting on Tuesday praised the decision.

Philip Ruby, chairman of the Historic Rochester Residents’ Association, said: “It is a triumph of common sense.”

Ian McLeod from the Historic Rochester Residents’ Association added: “We are not opposed to Subway.

"We were opposed to it staying open so late. I think the councillors gave it very careful consideration.”

Nearby resident Catherine Stevenson claimed an extension of hours would exasperate the problems of Rochester’s late night economy.

She added: “It is a fair decision. We don’t want to impede on any business. The conditions are quite clear and so any breach will be quite obvious.”

A number of other conditions were also imposed.

They include: only eight customers being able to eat and drink in the premises at any one time after 11pm, a door supervisor at the entrance who must be registered with the security industry authority and no food, drink or packaging must be taken off the premises.
