The Brook Theatre will be transformed into a scene from 1890s New York for the latest production by the Three Towns Theatre Company.

The amateur dramatics group will stage the musical Hello Dolly! for three nights this month.

The story follows bold and enchanting widow Dolly Levi (played by Melanie Poynter), a socialite turned matchmaker who is engaged in seeking a wife for cantankerous half-millionaire Horace Vandergelder, played by Tony Harrold and a young artist Ambrose Kemper (Charles Compton), who is in love with Vandergelder’s niece Ermengarde (Isobella Coady).

Dolly’s scheming soon involves Horace’s employees Cornelius (played by John Bishop) and Barnaby (Tom Holman) as well as New York hat-maker Mrs Irene Molloy (Samantha Grace) and her friend and employee Minnie Faye (Elizabeth Harrold) as she tries to hide her own romantic designs.

The musical features the songs Sunday Clothes, Elegance, It Takes A Woman and, of course, Hello Dolly!

Hello Dolly! was first produced on Broadway in 1964, winning 10 Tony Awards, including best musical, a record held for 37 years.

It has become one of the most enduring musical theatre hits, enjoying three Broadway revivals and international success. It was also made into a 1969 film that was nominated for Oscars, winning three.

Director Debra Harrold said: “Hello Dolly! is a classic musical with a fabulous score full of hit tunes made famous by stars like Barbra Streisand and Louis Armstrong.

“The cast have been working incredibly hard throughout the summer to put this together. I’m so proud of my talented cast.”

The show can be seen on October 27, 28 and 29. Performances are at 7.30pm nightly with a Saturday matinee at 2.30pm.
