A school has won thousands in prize money from a community competition to boost science education.

Rochester Grammar in Maidstone Road has been given £5,000 for its science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) club.

The contest between schools across Medway, Maidstone and Tonbridge and Malling, was organised by Rochester Bridge Trust.

Rochester Grammar secured the most public votes, followed by Fort Pitt in Chatham and Cornwallis Academy in Maidstone.

Principal, Clare Brinklow said: “Thank you very much to the Rochester Bridge Trust for its support, and to everyone who voted for us – this all makes a difference to the students and we are sure it will help inspire many future civil engineers.”

A cheque was presented during a visit to the school’s STEM club where members of Rochester Bridge’s team and education mascot Langdon the Lion were present.

Education Manager at the Trust, Caroline Chisholm said: “As the custodians of Rochester Bridge for more than 600 years, we are acutely aware of the crucial part civil engineering plays in safeguarding the country’s infrastructure.

“Through our STEM education programme and range of engineering scholarships, the Trust is keen to inspire young people to consider civil engineering as a future career.

“Congratulations to Rochester Grammar School on gaining so much support from the public and winning the competition.”

For schools that were unsuccessful, Caroline reminded them that there is still time for students to apply for a scholarship.

The closing date to apply is April 8 for those planning to study A-levels in maths and physics as well as design and technology.
