Firefighters were called to the M2 in the early hours of this morning as around 1,000 litres of fuel leaked onto the slip road.

A truck carrying the fuel had a hole in its tank, though to be caused by a piece of debris.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene on the London-bound junction 3 slip road, near Chatham, at just after 3am.

Crews used a clay putty to block the hole in the fuel tank, which was carrying approximately 1,800 litres in total, using clay mats to cover nearby drains.

Highways England attended the scene to assist Kent Fire and Rescue Service to help with the recovery.

Lane one of the motorway was closed whilst the incident was being dealt with, which was over by 6.05am.

Environment Agency also assisted with the incident.

Colin Bowley, Environment Agency Team Leader, said: “We assisted with the management of the incident by providing advice to professional partners.

"Initially we spoke with staff from Kent Fire and Rescue service who were containing the diesel leaking from the vehicle.

"Then Highways England who deployed trained contractors to clean up the spill and check the local surface water drainage network.

"We’re not expecting any further environmental impacts.”
