A sink hole which appeared in a road in Gillingham more than two weeks ago has still not been filled in.

The hole opened up on the corner of Khyber Road and Prince Arthur Road, near MidKent College, on March 24.

At the time the back wheels of David Turver’s tipper truck fell into it as he approached the junction. The 32-tonne vehicle was wedged forcing the closure of the road for several hours.

Mr Turver was able to get out of his lorry without injuring himself while police closed the road and diverted traffic along Mill Road and Brompton Road.

A lorry with a crane lifted the tipper truck out from the gap while highways engineers assessed the damage before Prince Arthur Road was reopened later the same day.

The area, which is owned by the Ministry of Defence was then fenced off and a spokesman said contractors were investigating to see what the issue was and how to repair it.

However this week, a spokesman confirmed repair work would not be completed until the end of the month.

The spokesman added: “Contractors, appointed by the Royal School of Military Engineers, have excavated the site and discovered that utility cabling needed to be repaired before the site could be backfilled.

“Work to fill the site and reinstate the road surface is due to be completed by the end of the month.”
