A Medway couple woke to a rustling noise in their bedroom – and discovered an unwelcome visitor in their home.

They spent four hours with the 2ft north American corn snake slithering around their terraced home in Brisbane Road, Chatham, before it curled up in the hearth downstairs.

The couple turned to the police for help who sent Ray Allibone, from an animal rescue centre on the Isle of Sheppey, to their aid.

The homeowner, who did not want to be named, said: “It was all rather unnerving and something I hope never to repeat.

“We are extremely grateful to Ray.”

Mr Allibone, who worked for 18 years at London Zoo and now runs Swampys Wildlife Rescue at Sheerness, believes the female snake probably wound up in the house after travelling through the terrace from a neighbouring property.

He said: “They tend to follow the scent of mice and travel in much the same way as a rodent would.”

Mr Allibone will be looking after the snake and will rehome it if necessary but hopes the owner will come forward.

He said: “These are non-venomous and very placid, but people should never approach any species they are unfamiliar with.”

He says the call he received from police is one of a growing number as more people choose to have snakes and reptiles as pets.
