A working men's club was ordered to close for the final two games of England's Euro 2020 campaign after a series of violent incidents at the venue.

The Palmerston Road Social Club in Chatham was slapped with a section 80 closure order last week.

It prevented the club from opening and screening the final two England games against Denmark and Italy respectively.

The decision was made following reports of three separate violent incidents while the football was being shown. It has since reopened but remains under review.

Police were first called to an altercation inside involving two women on Sunday June 13.

The victim suffered head injuries during the incident, but the offender has not yet been identified.

Later that month officers were called to a further disturbance at around 5.30pm on Tuesday June 29 while the Three Lions played Germany.

One person was alleged to have been injured and enquires into the incident are continuing.

Then on Saturday July 3, the day of England's quarter final clash with Ukraine, a man was reported to have been assaulted inside the club.

He received injuries consistent with puncture wounds and was treated at hospital before being discharged. A man was arrested and charged in connection to the incident.

The venue was served a section 76 closure notice three days later, ensuring it was closed for England's semi-final match on Wednesday.

A Section 80 closure order was then issued at Maidstone Magistrates’ Court and remained in place until after the tournament ended.

The social club will now be subject to a 28-day review.
