Car owners are being warned to make sure their vehicles are locked up after a spate of thefts.

Police have issued the warning following several incidents across Medway, particularly in Rochester in the past week.

Officers are investigating reports of items being stolen from vehicles left unlocked and motorcycles being taken.

Police say there has not been any "pattern of offending" with both secured and unsecured vehicles targeted.

Many reports around City Way in Rochester have been logged.

Cars were targeted in Jiniwin Road and Grafton Avenue last Thursday night.

Officers say the car in Jiniwin Road was broken into some time between 4.30pm on Thursday, February 2 and 7.45am on Friday, February 3.

The vehicle in Grafton Avenue was targeted between 5pm and 4.30am on the same days.

Both owners said they believed their vehicles were locked and no items were stolen but searches were carried out.

Insp Craig West, of the Medway Community Safety Unit, said: "I would encourage all motorists to ensure they physically check their vehicle is locked before leaving it, and not to rely on remote door locking devices."

Police are advising residents to make sure they:

• Remove any valuable or sentimental items
• Secure items in boots or take them out if the vehicle is left unattended
• Park in a secure car park or well-lit location whenever possible
• Wipe away satnav suction marks, as sometimes these entice a thief to break in.
