A speed camera has been vandalised by a vigilante who has dubbed themselves ‘Batman’.

Passers-by have been left confused by the strange sight in Hollywood Lane, Wainscott following the bizarre act of criminal damage.

The camera has been fitted with a bat box - an artificial roost for the winged mammals - and sprayed with black paint.

The vandal also stuck a ‘Batman has been here’ sticker on it.

Taped to it is a piece of paper with information about UK bat species law.

It details specific offences and how a conviction can be six months imprisonment and/or a fine.

The law states it is illegal to disturb bats when they are roosting, as well as to obstruct, remove, damage or destroy the places where bats live.

This information is available on the UK government website.

But there have been mixed reactions from residents on social media to the vandalism.

Commenting on a Facebook group, one person wrote: “People are saying ‘good job’ but then some idiot will drive down doing 70mph crash and hurt someone. Then everyone will be moaning again.”

Another said: “I hope that is a bat box because they cannot remove it.”

While someone else commented: “Good work. Top job.”
