Former sports minister Tracey Couch says the Champions League final should not be held in Russia after the invasion on Ukraine.

The Chatham and Aylesford MP is asking European football governing body UEFA to "urgently reconsider" switching it from the planned St Petersburg stadium to another venue.

UEFA is coming under pressure to find an alternative for the showpiece European sporting event following Vladimir Putin's decision to send troops into Ukraine yesterday.

Miss Crouch was speaking to PoliticsHome of her concerns about Russia hosting the final on May 29.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has also called for Russia to be stripped of the right to hold the match.

A possible contender for stepping in is Wembley Stadium.

A UEFA spokesman is reported as saying there are no plans "at present" to change the location.

Earlier the Prime Minister announced the UK will hit five Russian banks and three wealthy individuals with sanctions over the crisis in Ukraine.

The move is part of Britain’s “first barrage” of punitive measures ahead of a feared full-scale invasion by Moscow.

Boris Johnson told the Commons on Tuesday that immediate sanctions would be deployed against the Russian banks Rossiya, IS Bank, General Bank, Promsvyazbank and the Black Sea Bank, as well as three “very high net wealth individuals”.
