A £244,000 project to upgrade gas pipes has begun.

SGN will replace metal mains with plastic alternatives in the Sally Port Gardens area of Gillingham.

The 14-week project began on Monday, July 22 with the installation of temporary traffic lights in Maxwell Road at its junction with Garden Street and Sally Port for approximately two weeks. Garden Street will also be closed.

From Monday temporary traffic lights will also be put up in Sally Port Gardens for four weeks.

Engineers will then begin replacing gas mains and pipes in Great Lines, King Bastion and Singapore Drive until the end of October.

Pedestrian access will be maintained to all properties throughout the project although some on-street parking will be restricted.

SGN Engineering Manager Warwick Drawbridge said: “We’ve worked closely with the local authorities in planning this work and we will be doing everything we can to limit disruption during our essential project.

“We appreciate that roadworks can be frustrating, however, the new plastic pipe has a minimum lifespan of 80 years. This means once the work has been completed, Gillingham homes and businesses will enjoy the benefits of a continued safe and reliable gas supply for many years to come.”
