Three-way traffic lights after gas mains fire in Canterbury Street, Gillingham
14:37, 23 May 2023
Three-way temporary traffic lights have been put in place after a gas mains fire close to a busy high street.
Residents were forced to leave their homes in Canterbury Street, Gillingham, just before 1.30pm on Monday (May 22) after reports of a gas main alight.
Fire crews issued an update at 4.21pm to confirm the blaze was out and residents could return to their properties.
However, the road remained closed in both directions between Rock Avenue and the A231 for Nelson Road while repair works continued.
UK Power Networks engineers continue repairing underground electricity equipment in Canterbury Street today (May 23).
A spokesman said: “Power supplies to 740 customers were restored in stages between 2pm and 9pm yesterday.
“We are helping the authorities on site to investigate the cause.”
The fire has also caused damage to the SGN gas network in the area.
A spokesman for the gas company said: “Our engineers have made the situation safe and are working on permanent repairs.
“The road has now been re-opened and we’re working under three-way temporary traffic lights. All being well, our work will be complete by the end of today.”
