16:00, 30 March 2017

A man who repeatedly punched a woman in the head and dragged her by the hair has been locked up.

Lee Morris, 30, attacked the woman at a property in Chatham in June last year, leaving her with severe cuts to her head.

Morris admitted one count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and was jailed for 18 months at Maidstone Crown Court this week.

The court heard that Morris launched the attack following an argument with his partner during the afternoon of June 16.

Morris became agitated with the woman after she cleaned his mobile phone while she was in the process of cleaning the house.

This led to an argument and the victim walked away to avoid a confrontation.

Once she was away from Morris, of Hawbeck Road, Parkwood, Rainham, she called a friend for help but, as she was doing this, the offender slapped her in the face.

He then repeatedly punched her before grabbing her by the hair and dragging her on the floor.

He left her with cuts to the top of her head which had to be glued together.

Being convicted of the offence also activated a suspended sentence and in total, Morris will serve an extra four months of top of his 18 month sentence for the assault.

DC Gavin Humphrey said: “This was a senseless and completely reprehensible attack against an entirely innocent victim.

“By committing an assault as serious as this for a matter as trivial as having the screen of a mobile phone cleaned, Morris has shown himself to be a very real danger to women.

“It is entirely appropriate that he has received this prison sentence and I would urge him to use this time to reflect upon his behaviour and the impact it has had on the victim.

“It is unacceptable that, in the 21st century, people are still living in fear of, and being harmed by, their partners.

“We will take your report seriously, we will support you and we will do everything in our power to bring the offenders to justice – as this case shows.”
