Motorists were stuck in hoards of traffic after a lorry overturned and spilled its load of soil across the road.

The lorry overturned shortly before 5am this morning and caused delays for more than eight hours.

The traffic was queueing on the A228 Four Elms roundabout from Upchat Road to the A289 Wainscott Eastern Bypass.

There was congestion in Hoo along the westbound carriageway as well.

One lane remained closed for a period after the road was fully shut this morning because of the incident.

A diversion was put in place via Upchat Road, Woodfield Way and Islingham Farm Road to re-join the Wainscott bypass.

Police spokesman James Walker, said: "We were called to a report that a lorry had overturned on the Four Elms roundabout, heading towards the Medway Tunnel, at 4.57am.

"Officers attended the scene alongside crews from the South East Coast Ambulance Service and Kent Fire and Rescue Service.

"A road closure was put in place to allow crews emergency service crews to assess for any injuries and tend to an oil spill.

"This has since been lifted however a lane closure remains in place and motorists are advised to expect delays.

"No serious injuries have been reported."
