Floral tributes have been left in a high street for a well-known Big Issue seller who was a familiar face to many.
Known as Richard and in his early 40s, he passed away last Sunday in accommodation provided by a charity which supports the homeless.
He was often seen around Rochester High Street selling copies of the magazine and enjoyed chatting to traders and residents alike.
Flowers and messages have been left in the high street for Richard, at the juncton with Boley Hill.
Such was his popularity that staff at Rochester Cathedral invited people to light a candle as a remark of respect and he was mentioned in last Tuesday’s Evensong service.
Previously working as a scaffolder, he had been a street vendor for several years and was always out working in all weathers.
A well-established trader in the town centre, who did not wish to be named, said Richard would pop into the shop most days to pass his time.
She said:”He kept himself to himself, but had an adoptive family here in Rochester. Everyone knew him.
“He was a sweet, gentle man and will be missed by many.
It’s believed Richard died in his sleep at his digs in Luton run by landlords Amat. He grew up in Medway and had links to Lordswood and Walderslade.
An online post by Rochester Cathedral said: “Some of our local followers may have heard that Richard, a local man, has sadly passed away.
“Those who have been touched by Richard’s life and will miss him, may like to come into Rochester Cathedral during our opening hours. There you can take a moment of quiet, light a candle in his memory and commend him to God’s loving care. there is often someone available to listen to if that would be helpful.
“Richard will be remembered by name during the service of Evensong.”
