Strood Sports Centre closed this morning after a break-in just after midnight.
Staff turning up at the leisure complex in Watling Street discovered the burglary.
It was due to re-open this lunchtime after damage caused by the burglars was cleared.
Police were called at 12.30am after an intruder alarm was activated.
Spokesman Andy Saunders said: "Officers attended and found an entrance to the site had been forced.
"The building was searched but no suspects were located.
"Damage was caused inside to a vending machine and to the reception area.
"A forensic analysis of the crime scene as well as a review of CCTV is ongoing."
It's understood nothing was stolen from the multi-purpose centre, which includes a swimming pool, gym and all-weather pitches
Speaking this morning, Bob Dimond, Medway Council’s head of sport leisure, tourism and heritage, said: “Unfortunately, there was a reported break-in.
"The centre was closed this morning, and will be reopening at midday. The matter has been reported to the police.”
