Nightclub for people with disabilities celebrates its first birthday at The Factory Bar in Gillingham
12:18, 10 August 2017
A nightclub for people with disabilities has celebrated its first birthday.
G.Beatz was launched in Factory Bar at Priestfield Stadium on August 7, 2016 by Grace Allen.
Her foster brother, Steven, has foetal alcohol syndrome and couldn’t find anywhere to go clubbing as he feared he would not fit in.

Ms Allen said: “There were other clubs like this but none local to Medway, it would mean travelling and then he can’t go on his own. He didn’t want to go clubbing with his sister.
“I had a look around Medway and there was nothing. I set it up because I thought there must be other people in the same situation.”
When it first opened it averaged around 70 people each night but now, Grace expects between 130 and 150 users and their carers.
She added: “It takes the pressure of the carers and parents a bit. They know they are safe when they come here.

“They love it, they can let their hair down, have a dance and feel like they belong.
Paulette Barnett is a parent and carer for her daughter who has a learning disability, dyspraxia and hyper mobility.
She said: “It’s been fantastic, just awesome for support workers, carers and the users.
“They love it, we love it, I love it, everyone loves it.
“She can come along in a safe environment, have a dance and socialise. It’s opened up a lot of possibilities.
“When we first came she stayed by my side but now she goes around, she dances, goes off talks to her friends. It’s fantastic.”
The events are held on the second and last Monday of every month and cost £5 for users and carers. Carers will receive a free soft drink.
