A woman who fell from a motorway bridge is fighting for her life in hospital this morning.

Fire and rescue teams were called to the River Medway just after 7pm yesterday following reports she had fallen from the coastbound section of the M2.

The victim, in her 40s, was pulled from the water near Medway Bridge Marina and handed into the care of paramedics.

She was then treated in the air ambulance, which landed at nearby Borstal Recreation Ground at 8pm, before being flown to hospital at 8.30pm.

Police sent several response vehicles to the scene yesterday evening and it was confirmed the woman had been taken to King's College Hospital where she remains in a critical condition.

Ambulance service spokesman Brian Cumming said: "We sent three response cars and an ambulance to a faller from the Medway Bridge. The patient was recovered from the water around Medway Marina and flown to King's College Hospital with serious injuries by the air ambulance."

The nature of her injuries are not known.
